Journeys

These illustrations tell the stories of individuals who journeyed to the U.S for different reasons – some intended for their stay to be temporary, others were looking for a safe place to call home. The experiences of asylum seekers and immigration detainees in the 21st century echoes the conditions faced by foreign-born immigrants sponsored by U.S.-born relatives and non-white U.S.-born citizens re-entering the country in the early 20th century.
